Cheval is a tight-knit community, and word travels fast there. When one neighbor starts playing pickleball, three more show up at the courts the next week. It is one of the fastest-growing sports in this area, and I have worked with quite a few Cheval players over the past couple of years.
I am Coach Igor, owner of I&G Pickleball in New Port Richey, FL. I offer pickleball lessons to players throughout the Tampa Bay area, including Cheval and the communities nearby. A lot of Cheval players come to me after hitting a wall. They are playing regularly, they feel like they are working hard, but they are not getting better. That is usually because they are practicing their mistakes, not fixing them.
My pickleball lessons start with a real look at how you play. I watch your movement, your grip, your shot selection, and how you handle different situations on the court. From there, we build a plan around what actually needs work, not a generic curriculum.

Group Pickleball Lessons
Cheval is the kind of place where people like doing things together. Group pickleball lessons work really well in communities like this because you can learn alongside neighbors or friends and still get real coaching, not just a casual hit-around.
I keep my groups small so that everyone gets individual attention. Each person leaves with specific things to work on, not just a general sense that the session was fun. That is the difference between a group lesson and a glorified open play session.
Group settings also create competition and energy that speed up learning. When everyone in the group is pushing to improve, you tend to rise to that level faster than you would on your own.
Private Pickleball Lessons
For Cheval players who want to improve fast and do not want to share court time, private pickleball lessons are the best option. Every second of the session is focused on your game, your weaknesses, and your goals.
Private lessons are also the most flexible. We can schedule around your availability, work on the specific skills you feel worst about, and move at whatever pace makes sense for you. There is no curriculum to follow and no one else’s needs to work around.
If you have a tournament coming up or a specific goal you are chasing, a private lesson plan is the fastest path to get there. I will put together something based on your timeline and what matters most.
Beginner Pickleball Lessons
If you are new to pickleball, Cheval has a great community to learn alongside. The sport is social, low-impact, and easy to pick up at a basic level. But starting with beginner pickleball lessons means you build the right habits from the beginning instead of spending years unlearning bad ones.
My beginner lessons cover everything you need to get on the court with confidence. Paddle grip, legal serving, the two-bounce rule, kitchen line positioning, and basic scoring. I also teach court awareness from day one because that is the piece most beginners never get until much later.
You do not need any prior experience or equipment. If you are shopping for a first paddle, I can point you in the right direction. Just come ready to learn and have a good time.
Pickleball Drills and Technique
One thing I tell every Cheval player I work with: there is a big difference between playing and practicing. Playing games is fun, but if you are making the same mistakes every rally, you are just getting more comfortable with those mistakes.
Pickleball drills are how real improvement happens. I use targeted drills based on what I see in your game. Soft game at the kitchen line, dink exchanges under pressure, third shot drops, resetting hard-driven balls, and footwork patterns that put you in position to win more points.
Technique goes hand in hand with drills. Grip pressure, paddle face angle, hip and shoulder rotation, and where your eyes go during a rally all matter more than most players realize. I catch those details and fix them early.
Pickleball Strategy
Pickleball strategy is what takes a player from good to someone people do not want to play against. You can have clean mechanics and still lose if your shot selection is off or if you do not know how to manage a point once it gets long.
With my Cheval students, I spend real time on the mental side of the game. When to speed up, when to reset, how to identify an opponent’s weakness, how to use patterns to set up the shots you want, and how to stay calm when a match gets tight.
Strategy is not something you can pick up just by playing more. It has to be taught and practiced intentionally. Once it clicks, everything else in your game starts to make more sense.
Serving Cheval and the Surrounding Area
Cheval sits in northwest Hillsborough County, right between Lutz and the Odessa area. I work with players from all of these communities and travel to courts throughout the region. Getting to Cheval is easy from New Port Richey, and I can usually find a court location that works well for you.
